Walking by the Spirit

So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. Galatians 5:16 NIV

In my late teens and early twenties, I used to hike the trails of southern Indiana with my friend Michael. As an Eagle Scout, he was a great trail guide and leader. Occasionally, we would encounter a path blocked by a fallen tree or an overgrown trail, and we would have to do a little bushwhacking. Though we would frequently walk in silence, we share a particular joy in the beauty of our surroundings and the companionable silence.

In following Christ, we are never walking alone but by his Spirit. When encountering the "desires of the flesh," our seasoned guide comes to our aid. Though we may feel lost and uncertain of our direction at times, in faith, we can set aside our anxieties because we trust our leader. Although our guide may sometimes be inaudible, its presence is continuously and persistently with us, moving us forward in the right direction.

Father, we thank you for sending your Son to offer the pathway to redemption. Also, thank you for our leader and guide, the Holy Spirit, which directs us on the right path. Open our ears and hearts to your companionable presence, and help us stand against wickedness. In Christ's name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
