"Walk with the wise and become wise, for a companion of fools suffers harm." Proverbs 13:20 NIV
As daughters and sons, our parents wanted to know who our friends were. To keep us safe, they desired to meet our pals and discern their character. Did they come from families with good moral ethics? Did our friends have bad habits? Our parents did their best to ensure we associated with the wise and not the foolish. But, of course, occasionally, we might have become the "companion of fools" -- choosing to live on the wild side -- and got ourselves in trouble. It never ends well for anyone when you hang with fools.
The company we keep is important, not only as children but throughout our lives. As we grow older and our earthly parents are no longer there to protect us, we have a heavenly Father who remains. When in doubt of wise and foolishness, we have the Bible as a reference guide. We also have the voice of the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us. Finally, should we wander into the path of the foolish, we have our Father to forgive us.
God, we give thanks to our earthly parents who cared for us. We also give thanks for wise friends. But, most of all, we are thankful for you, our heavenly Father, and your ever-present love. We pray for discernment in choosing our companions. May we be a source of strength, comfort, and love for each other. Protect us from the unwise that would distract us from you. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
