A Prayer for the Blues

"Investigate my life, O God, find out everything about me; Cross-examine and test me, get a clear picture of what I’m about; See for yourself whether I’ve done anything wrong— then guide me on the road to eternal life." Psalm 139:23‭-‬24 MSG

I like blues music. There is something raw, gutsy, and primitive about the lyrics. The blues take all that real daily living stuff that resides in our souls’ recesses and drags it into the daylight. But in the blues is also hope.

Today's prayer reminds me of the blues. The author is bearing their soul to God. Come on in God, look inside of me, and see what is there. Check out the good and bad of me. Where you find faults, test me, and change me.

To willingly open ourselves like that is very brave. There are some things, maybe in the past, but still there that you would prefer to keep hidden. But when we fully offer God our lives, it's like the best blues song ever; all those things weighing us down, the disappointments and heartbreaks are gone and hope renewed. He does not care about what has happened in the past, we are forgiven, those things do not define us. God encourages us to look towards the future.

God, we invite you into our messy hearts. We know there's stuff in there that we are sorry for, and some that are downright embarrassing. But come on in and walk around, clean house, and throw out all the clutter. Make any needed changes. Use me and guide me. In your Son Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

Blessings!

Pastor Tim
