Departing Mountains

For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you, and my covenant of peace shall not be removed, says the Lord, who has compassion on you. Isaiah 54:10 NRSV

We needn't look far before we think of an occasion when the world seemed to crumble for us or someone we love. So often, it begins with a single event that cascades like a landslide, perhaps a sickness, job loss, or addiction. The people and things in whom we had placed our trust vanish. Our lives are so shaken we may despair in finding solid footing; each step seems to settle on loosened rubble.

In today's verse, God assures Israel he has never forsaken them. They had witnessed the conquering of their nation and had been carried away into exile. Separated from everything they had relied on, all the mountains and hills in which they placed their trust were gone. Yet, God's love and peace remained steadfast. While things certainly looked bleak at that moment, they were about to get better. God's deliverance was ahead.

As Christians, we know what was true for the Israel of Isaiah is still true. Whatever our situation, God remains with us no matter how hopeless the problem appears right now. He doesn't pack up and leave when things go south but remains. He is our sure footing among the rubble, and he will deliver.

God of deliverance, we thank you for your never-ending love and peace. We pray for all those whose mountains are departing and whose hills are being removed right now. Help them remember they needn't but that you are in their midst. May we be your willing instruments of care and compassion to provide hope. In Christ's name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
