Do Your Best

"Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." — 2 Timothy 2:15 (NIV)

From Pop Warner through high school, our boys played football. If they won, the post-game conversations were generally easier, but when they lost, it was a different story. There was always disappointment. Sometimes it was rooted in anger, sometimes in sorrow, and sometimes in quiet acceptance. But there was always a measure of self-reflection about their own performance.

After the game, Janice or I would often ask a simple question: "Did you play your best?" If the answer was yes, that was usually enough to begin the healing process. A loss still stung, but they could walk away knowing they had given everything they had. If the answer was no, then we could talk about what they might do differently next time.

Those two questions, Am I doing my best? and What can I do better? are good spiritual questions as well.

Paul gives his spiritual son Timothy similar advice: "Do your best." Not be perfect. Not never fail. Not earn God's approval through flawless performance. Simply do your best for God.

I think that's because God understands us far better than we understand ourselves. Like a loving parent, God knows our strengths and weaknesses, our victories and failures. Any parent can tell the difference between a child who gives their all and one who quits before the effort is made. What matters is not perfection, but faithfulness.

At the same time, Paul is not telling Timothy to rely on sheer willpower. The Christian life is not about trying harder on our own. Most of us have tried that often enough to know it doesn't work. But the same God who calls us to faithfulness also gives us the gift of the Holy Spirit. Through the Spirit, God teaches, corrects, strengthens, and helps us grow. We are never left to face life's challenges by ourselves.

Perhaps that raises a third question: How is God helping me grow?

As we earnestly seek to do our best, the Holy Spirit works within us, shaping us into the people God created us to be. When we fall short, the Spirit convicts us. When we are discouraged, the Spirit encourages us. When we don't know what to do next, the Spirit guides us.

Today, take a moment to reflect on those three questions: Am I doing my best? What can I do better? How is God helping me grow? Then joyfully thank God for His grace. Like a loving parent, He does not wait for perfection to love us. Instead, He calls us forward and patiently helps us grow, one step at a time.

Gracious God, thank You for loving us as Your children. Help us to offer You our best, not out of fear, but out of gratitude for Your grace. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit, that we may continue to learn, grow, and follow faithfully wherever You lead. Amen.

Grace & Peace, Pastor Tim
