Nothing to Hide
"Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts." (Psalm 139:23)
As I read today’s verse, I was struck by the prayer's remarkable boldness. And if we’re honest with ourselves, most of us would probably pray the opposite. "Lord, please don't look too closely. Leave that part of my heart alone. Don't test me. Don't expose my fears. Don't examine the thoughts I'd rather keep hidden."
Yet the psalmist does exactly that. With confidence, he openly invites God to search him completely. It's as if he's saying, "Come on in, Lord. Open every closet, look under every bed, and shine Your light into every corner of my heart."
Why? Because his trust leaves no room for hiding.
When we trust God's love, we no longer have to pretend. We can bring before Him the wounds we're ashamed of, the fears that keep us awake at night, and even the thoughts that seem to come from nowhere and lead us where we do not want to go.
The Apostle Paul understood this struggle. In Romans 7, he confesses that he often found himself doing what he did not want to do and failing to do what he knew was right, recognizing the painful reality that the human heart is not always aligned with God's will.
Yet Paul's answer was not to hide from God. It was to be honest before Him and to rely more completely on the grace revealed in Jesus Christ.
Because of Christ, we do not need to fear being known. The One who searches us is the same One who loves us, forgives us, and redeems us. God's searching is not an act of condemnation but of transformation. He reveals what is broken so He can heal it. He exposes what is hidden so He can bring it into the light.
Through our trust in Jesus Christ, we can pray with the same confidence as the psalmist: "Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts."
Like the psalmist, we can pray these words boldly because we know that whatever God finds, His grace is greater still.
Lord Jesus, You know us completely and love us perfectly. Search the places we keep hidden. Bring Your light into our darkness, Your peace into our fears, and Your grace into our struggles. When we are tempted to hide, remind us that nowhere can we go beyond Your love. Create in us clean hearts, renew steadfast spirits within us, and lead us in the way everlasting. We trust You with all that we are, all that we have been, and all that we are becoming. Amen.
Grace & Peace, Pastor Tim
