God’s Majestic Care

When I look up at your skies, at what your fingers made— the moon and the stars that you set firmly in place— what are human beings that you think about them; what are human beings that you pay attention to them? Psalms 8:3-4 (CEB)

I don’t know if people do it anymore, but there used to be a time in summers past when folks would go out in the yard and gaze up at the skies. I have a feeling that most of those simple pleasures have been replaced by folks instead gazing upon the television of the evening. But if they were to look up, they would be no less amazed at God’s creation–and what we can observe is only the beginning; it continues on and on.

When we read today’s verse, we can imagine the shepherd David settling down with his flock for the evening. Once they’ve eaten, drank, and been bedded–the sheep always come first–David lies on his back and communes with creation. After peering upon God’s handiwork, his thoughts turn inwardly. What is it that the God who created all who looked upon also created and cared for him?

David is not alone in this thought; in Matthew 6:26, written thousands of years later, Jesus tells his disciples, “Look at the birds in the sky. They don’t sow seed or harvest grain or gather crops into barns. Yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth much more than they are?”

When we consider the vastness of the universe and the intricate beauty of creation, it is astounding to realize that the Creator of all this also cares intensely for each of us. Just as David ensured his sheep were fed and safe before resting, we too can find comfort in knowing that God prioritizes our needs and well-being. As David marveled at the stars and questioned his significance, we too can find solace in knowing that God values and loves us. This understanding should fill us with awe and gratitude.

Today, as we navigate our lives, let’s remember that the same God who set the stars in place is intimately involved in our lives, caring for us and providing for our needs.

Creator God, thank you for all Your marvelous works. Compassionate God, thank you for Your providence. Loving God, thank you for Your salvation found in Jesus Christ. Caring God, thank you for the Holy Spirit which leads and guides us in Your path. May we look around us with thankful hearts for all that You are. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
