Joy in Unexpected Places

"Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." (Hebrews 12:2, NIV)

Joy is not always found where we expect it. We look for it in celebrations, successes, and comfort. Yet joy often surprises us in the least likely times—at a celebration of life service where memories bring laughter, in hospital waiting rooms where hope flickers, in moments of weakness when God’s strength carries us. And we do not discover this joy alone.

In the midst of the Christmas season, Hebrews 12:2 reminds us that joy is not cheap. Jesus endured shame and pain, suffering death as a criminal, for the sake of joy. His joy was in returning to the Father, but also in fulfilling his mission of atonement for our sin. Because of his sacrifice, we too may find joy—joy that reconciles us to the Father, joy that assures us Christ is with us even now, seated at God’s right hand.

This joy is not dependent on circumstances. In grief, in waiting, in weakness, in service, we can experience joy in knowing that Christ’s victory is ours. His joy becomes our joy, even in the unlikeliest of times.

Lord Jesus, thank you for enduring the cross for the joy set before you. Teach us to find joy not only in celebration but also in sorrow, waiting, and weakness. May your joy be our strength, and may we fix our eyes on you, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. Amen.

Grace & Joy!
