"Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn." —Isaiah 60:3 (NIV)
God created both darkness and light and called them good. In this rhythm of day and night, we find space for rest and renewal, for work and worship. We do not disparage the physical darkness—it is, after all, God’s gift.
But we reject the metaphysical darkness of sin, where truth is obscured and love is withheld. In the fullness of light, we see what was hidden. In the brightness of dawn, we are reminded of Christ’s goodness and the light of salvation.
Isaiah’s words speak to both Israel’s return from exile and the coming of Jesus. In verses 1–2, he declares:
"Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you."
This invitation echoes across time. We are called to be the light of Christ in the world. Through us, his light shines—drawing others out of darkness and into grace.
The “nations” are not abstract entities but communities of people—flesh, blood, and spirit like each of us, longing for hope. Our leaders are not distant figures like demi-gods, but like all of us, souls in need of light.
From Isaiah’s vision to Paul’s commission, the call to radiant witness echoes in Romans 10:14:
"How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?"
As Israel awaited release and the Messiah’s arrival, we await Christ’s return. On that day, his light will reign over every shadow. All people will acknowledge the true ruler of all nations. Until then, we are his radiant witnesses—shining with purpose, proclaiming his glory.
Light of the World, You spoke light into being and called it good. You shine upon us still—through Christ, through Scripture, through the Spirit within. In a world shadowed by fear and division, make us radiant with your love. Let our words illuminate Your truth, our actions reflect Your grace, and our lives bear witness to Your coming kingdom. Until the brightness of your return, help us shine with holy purpose. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Peace & Grace,
Pastor Tim
