Be merciful to those who doubt. Jude 1:22 (NIV)
Read Jude 1:20-23
In our fast-paced, solution-oriented world, it’s common for people to look outward when faced with problems, seeking answers in external solutions. Whether it’s through technology, self-help books, or expert advice, the tendency is to address issues by changing circumstances or acquiring new tools. However, this approach often overlooks a profound and transformative resource available to believers: the Holy Spirit. Instead of solely relying on external fixes, turning inward and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit can lead to deeper, more lasting solutions. The Holy Spirit offers wisdom, comfort, and direction that surpasses human understanding, reminding us that true change often begins within. Developing a relationship with the Holy Spirit allows us to face life’s challenges with a peace and purpose that external solutions alone cannot offer.
Jude believed to be Jesus's half-brother, emphasizes that instead of attacking dangerous individuals directly, believers should first focus on their own spiritual walk with the Lord. In this passage, he encourages believers to:
Strengthen Our Faith: We should build ourselves up in holy faith, which involves deepening our understanding and practice of faith.
Pray in the Holy Spirit: Rely on the guidance and power of the Holy Spirit in prayer.
Keep in God’s Love: Stay in the love of God, living in a way that reflects God’s love and commands.
Look for Jesus' Mercy: We should keep our hope and focus on Jesus Christ's mercy and return.
Help Others: Show mercy to those who doubt, save others by snatching them from the fire, and show mercy mixed with fear to those deeply entrenched in sin.
How do we help others?
Show Mercy to Those Who Doubt: As Christians, we encounter people who struggle with their faith or have doubts about their beliefs. Instead of judging or dismissing them, we are called to show compassion and patience. This means listening to their concerns, offering encouragement, and gently guiding them toward a deeper understanding of their faith. In being supportive, we can help them navigate their doubts and strengthen their relationship with God.
Save Others by Snatching Them from the Fire: This metaphor suggests taking urgent and decisive action to help those in immediate spiritual danger. It means being proactive in reaching out to friends, family, or community members engaging in harmful behaviors or beliefs. We can help redirect them toward a healthier and more spiritually fulfilling path by offering guidance, support, and sometimes even intervention. This might involve having difficult conversations, providing resources, or connecting them with a supportive community.
Show Mercy Mixed with Fear: When helping those deeply entrenched in sin, it’s essential to approach the situation with both compassion and caution. We should extend mercy and love, recognizing that everyone needs God’s grace. However, we must also be aware of the potential dangers and protect ourselves from being influenced or drawn into the same sinful behaviors. This balance ensures we can offer help without compromising our spiritual well-being.
How might we apply these learnings?
In Friendships: Be a source of support and encouragement for friends struggling with their faith or facing difficult situations. Offer to pray with them, share uplifting scripture, and be a listening ear.
In Families: Guide family members who may be making harmful choices by setting a positive example, having open and honest conversations, and providing a loving and supportive environment.
In Communities: Engage with your church or local community by participating in outreach programs, volunteering, and being an active member of a faith-based support network. Show kindness and compassion to those in need and be willing to step in when someone requires urgent help.
Take a moment to reflect on your own life. Are there areas where you have been seeking external solutions instead of turning inward and seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit? How can you apply Jude’s teachings to strengthen your faith, pray more earnestly, and keep yourself in God’s love? Consider how you can show mercy to those around you, especially those struggling with doubt or in spiritual danger. Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you in being a compassionate and proactive helper in your friendships, family, and community.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit, who guides us with wisdom and love. Help us to turn inward and seek Your Spirit in times of trouble rather than relying solely on external solutions. Grant us the compassion to show mercy to those who doubt, the courage to save others from spiritual danger, and the discernment to help those deeply entrenched in sin with love and caution. May we support and encourage our friends, families, and communities, reflecting Your grace in all we do. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
