Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. Ecclesiastes 4:9 NLT
In Ecclesiastes 4:7-12, we find a profound message about the importance of companionship and mutual support. The passage begins by describing the futility of a man who toils alone, without a companion to share his labor or his rewards. This solitary existence is deemed "meaningless" because it lacks the joy and fulfillment of shared experiences.
The writer then shifts to highlight the benefits of companionship, saying:
Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor.
If either of them falls, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.
If two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone?
Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves.Â
This passage underscores the strength and resilience of unity and mutual support. It reminds us that we are not meant to walk this journey alone. When we bear each other's burdens, we fulfill a divine purpose and find strength in our shared struggles and victories.
In Luke 10:1, Jesus sends seventy-two disciples in pairs to every town and place He is about to visit. Sending them in pairs highlights the importance of mutual support and companionship in ministry. By working together, the disciples can encourage and strengthen each other, reflecting the principle that "two are better than one."
Likewise, the apostle Paul echoes this message of bearing each other's burdens and the strength found in unity. In Galatians 6:2, he writes that we should "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ." Also, in Romans 15:1-2, "We who are strong must be considerate of those who are sensitive about things like this. We must not just please ourselves. We should help others do what is right and build them up in the Lord".
In verse 12, the author of Ecclesiastes concludes, "Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken," which symbolizes the strength that comes from unity. For believers, this third strand is Jesus Christ. He is the one who binds us together, providing the strength and resilience we need to face life's challenges. With Jesus in our midst, we are never truly alone. His presence fortifies our relationships and empowers us to support one another in love and faith.
As believers embodying Christ's example, we are to encourage one another, pray together, and remain connected. Sometimes, we are the giver, and at other times, we are the receiver.Â
But it is mutually beneficial to us all. We share in the joy, grow in love, compassion, and community, and create stronger connections—all things that reflect the body of Christ.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of companionship and the strength we find in unity. Help us to bear each other's burdens and to support one another with the love and compassion that Jesus showed us. May we always remember that with You as our third strand, we are never alone, and our bonds are unbreakable. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
