The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord—has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! Luke 2:11 (NLT)
Imagine a person born into incarceration with no hope of parole. This might seem like an extreme scenario, but consider someone born to parents who were imprisoned, leading to their child growing up within the confines of the prison system. This person grows up within the prison walls, never experiencing freedom, constantly burdened by the guilt of their consequences. One day, a visitor arrives with an astonishing offer: to free them from their bondage. Despite this new freedom, the person is still tempted to fall back into old patterns that could lead them back to captivity. However, their sponsor remains by their side, guiding them, supporting them, and helping them resist the temptations that threaten their freedom.
This scenario describes our spiritual condition before Jesus' birth. In today's verse, the author reminds us of how Jesus' coming to earth released us from spiritual bondage and gave us the hope of true freedom. Savior, Messiah, the Lord—these titles hold special meaning to our deliverance.
Savior: As our Savior, Jesus rescues us from the power of sin and death. He takes upon Himself the punishment that we deserve, breaking the chains that held us captive.
Messiah: As the anointed one, He fulfills the prophecies and promises of God, bringing the hope of a new covenant and relationship with the Father. His life and teachings give us the guidance we need to walk in righteousness.
Lord: As our Lord, Jesus has authority over our lives. He directs our paths and gives us the strength to resist the temptations that try to lure us back into spiritual captivity.
Without Jesus, we would still be trapped in a hopeless cycle of sin, unable to break free on our own. But because He was born, we have been offered a freedom that transforms our lives and leads us into an eternal relationship with God.
Heavenly Father, we are grateful for the birth of Your Son, Jesus, who came to set us free from the bondage of sin. Thank You for being our Savior, Messiah, and Lord, guiding us and supporting us in our journey. Help us to embrace this freedom and live lives that honor You. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
