The Harvest of Perseverance

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.” - Galatians 6:9 (NIV)

A few years ago, I read the book Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, the true story of Louis Zamperini. During World War II, he survived a plane crash and was stranded at sea for 47 days, only to be captured by the Japanese and spend more than two horrific years in various POW camps where he suffered unthinkable torture. In the years that followed his return home, he struggled with PTSD and alcoholism, which placed significant strain on his marriage. His wife, Cynthia, was on the verge of leaving him when she attended a Billy Graham crusade and gave her life to Christ. Despite her conversion, their marriage continued to be troubled. Finally, as a result of her continued love and patience, she convinced Louie to attend the same crusade, where he experienced a “Saul-on-the-road-to-Damascus” moment. The remainder of the book discusses how he found peace and forgiveness following his conversion.

This story beautifully illustrates the message of today's verse. Despite the immense challenges in her marriage, Cynthia’s unwavering faith and perseverance in doing good eventually led to a transformative harvest. Her steadfastness and love were instrumental in Louie’s conversion, bringing healing and peace to their lives.

Often, there is not an immediacy to our doing good. A gardener does not plant seed and harvest the crop the next day. No, the planter must lovingly tend the seed and wait. This involves watering it regularly, ensuring it receives adequate sunlight, and protecting it from pests and harsh weather. The gardener’s patience and consistent care are essential for growing the seed into a healthy, fruitful plant. Similarly, in our lives, we must persist in doing good, nurturing our actions with love and faith, trusting that we will see the fruits of our labor in due time.

Unbroken is a powerful testament to the truth of today’s verse. The Zamperini’s journey reminds us that perseverance in doing good, even amid immense challenges, can lead to profound transformation and healing. Cynthia’s unwavering faith and love were the seeds that, with time and patience, brought about a harvest in their lives. Like the gardener who tends plants with care and diligence, we must nurture our actions with love and faith, trusting that our efforts will bear fruit in due time

Most Gracious God, we thank You for the reminder that our perseverance in doing good is never in vain. Help us to remain steadfast in our faith and actions, even when the results are not immediate. Grant us the patience and strength to continue nurturing the seeds we plant, trusting that You will bring about a bountiful harvest in Your perfect timing. May we be inspired by the story of Louis and Cynthia Zamperini to persist in love and faith, knowing that You are always at work in our lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
