The Promise

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” - John 11:25-26 (NIV)

Jesus had come to Martha and Mary, the sisters of Lazarus, in their time of grief. Their brother had been in the grave for four days, and as they mourned, they received word that Jesus was coming to share in their mourning. Martha, so moved by the news, ran out to greet him. In her greeting, she stated her belief that Lazarus would have been healed had Jesus been there earlier and her faith that God would do whatever Jesus asked. Jesus states without hesitation, “Your brother will rise again” (v. 23). Not quite grasping that Jesus meant Lazarus would be raised today, Martha responds she believes in Lazarus' future resurrection.

While Lazarus did walk away from the grave that day, he would die a physical death again. However, the resurrection and life Jesus promised to those who believe in him are not merely physical but spiritual. This promise offers a profound hope that is unique to Christianity. We have these reasons for hope in the promise found in these verses:

  • Assurance of Eternal Life: Jesus' promise assures us that physical death is not the end. This assurance provides peace and comfort, knowing that life continues beyond the grave in a transformed, eternal existence with God.

  • Victory Over Death: Jesus’ resurrection demonstrates his power over death, offering us the hope that we, too, will conquer death through faith in him.

  • Personal Relationship with Jesus: The promise emphasizes an ongoing, personal relationship with Jesus, who is not just a historical figure but a living presence offering daily hope and strength.

  • Fulfillment of God's Plan: This promise aligns with God’s plan of salvation, giving us a sense of purpose and direction in our spiritual journey.

  • Hope in Suffering: Believing in Jesus’ promise provides hope amidst suffering and loss. We find solace in believing that our trials are temporary compared to the eternal joy that awaits us.

The story of Lazarus highlights not only Jesus's miraculous power but also the transformative hope that comes from believing in him. As believers, we are invited to live with the confidence that, through Jesus, we have been given the gift of eternal life. This hope is a cornerstone of our faith, shaping our perspective on life and death and guiding our lives.

Heavenly Father, thank you for the profound promise of eternal life through your Son, Jesus Christ. In times of grief and uncertainty, help us to hold firmly to this hope. Strengthen our faith and remind us daily of your presence and love. May we live each day with assurance of your resurrection power and the eternal life that awaits. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
