The Way

“Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’” — John 14:6 (NIV)
Thomas had walked with Jesus from the beginning. He had heard every teaching, witnessed every healing, watched every act of compassion. And still, on the night before the cross, he speaks for all of us: “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Jesus doesn’t scold him. He doesn’t shame him. He simply offers the truth on which every follower since has leaned—one brief, respectful, steadying sentence: I am the way.
That matters because Jesus doesn’t hand us a map; he gives himself to us. The way is not a technique, a philosophy, or a spiritual ladder to climb. The way is a relationship. It echoes the shepherd who “calls his own sheep by name and leads them out” (John 10:3). It resonates with the promise, “Surely I am with you always” (Matthew 28:20). It aligns with the invitation, “Remain in me, as I also remain in you” (John 15:4).
When Jesus says he is the way, he is telling anxious disciples—then and now—that we don’t have to figure out the path on our own. When he says he is the truth, he is reminding us that God’s heart is not hidden or shifting. When he says he is the life, he is assuring us that even in seasons of uncertainty, loss, or fear, the life of God is already reaching toward us.
We live in a world full of competing voices, complicated choices, and moments when we feel like Thomas—unsure, overwhelmed, or simply tired. But Jesus meets us in that place with the same calm clarity. He doesn’t demand that we know everything. He asks only that we trust the One who walks with us.
Lord Jesus, thank you for being the way when we feel lost, the truth when we feel confused, and the life when we feel weary. Lead us today in your peace. Help us trust your presence more than our fears and guide our steps in love. Amen.
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Tim
