For, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:13 NIV
Read Romans 10:1-13
For a brief pause, it seems that the nation has come together to condemn the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump. Human nature, being what it is, however, will soon resume its previous state of animosity and division. Sadly, it seems that the default of the world, while unhappy, is best satisfied when we are bickering. If it’s not politics, it's other things like race, nationalism, and sexuality.
The apostle Paul addressed another division between the Law–the God-given directions to Moses for the people of Israel, and Faith, those newcomers who knew nothing of the Law but believed in Jesus Christ. Paul acknowledges that the Mosaic Law was given to Israel alone. The Law made the people aware of their inherent sinfulness and the need for a Savior. The animal sacrifices they offered were temporary and needed repetition. Jesus’ sacrifice was, once and for all, providing eternal atonement.
Paul emphasized that salvation comes through faith in Jesus rather than adherence to the Law. He did not explicitly ask Jews to stop following it. Instead, he highlighted the Law’s limitations and its inability to justify or save. It was by faith in Jesus as the Messiah that unity, whether Gentile or Jew, could be found. In the preceding verse, he says, “For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile—the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him.” (v. 12)
If we desire continuing unity today, whether in politics, race, nationalism, sexuality, or anything else, the answer remains the same–faith in Jesus Christ. There is still room for difference. We’re not expected to be clones or content with a drone mentality, but to let the reconciling God who sent His only Son to save us from ourselves lead and guide us. We may find lasting peace when we turn to Christ as our Savior and act as He demonstrated, treating each other with respect, honesty, and love.
Heavenly Father,
We come before You with hearts open, seeking unity and understanding. Just as the apostle Paul addressed the division between the Law and Faith, we recognize that our world is filled with differences, opinions, and varying perspectives. Yet, in the midst of it all, we long for unity.
Lord, we thank You for the Mosaic Law, which revealed our need for a Savior. The sacrifices offered were temporary, pointing to the ultimate sacrifice of Your Son, Jesus Christ. His atonement was once and for all, providing eternal redemption.
Lord, help us understand that salvation comes through faith in Jesus. May we not rely solely on our efforts or adherence to rules but rather trust in the finished work of the cross. May we find unity in Christ, whatever separates us, recognizing that You are the same Lord over all.
We seek Your guidance in a world divided by politics, race, and various ideologies. Teach us to treat one another with respect, honesty, and love. May we be agents of reconciliation, following the example of Jesus.
Lord, lead us away from a drone mentality, where we merely conform to the world's expectations. Instead, empower us to be authentic, embracing our differences while holding fast to our faith in Christ.
We pray for lasting peace, knowing that true harmony is found in You. May our lives reflect the reconciling love of Jesus, drawing others toward Him.
In His precious name, we pray. Amen.
Blessings,
Pastor Tim
