What Do You Seek?

Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, “What do you seek?” John 1:38 NKJV

In John 1:35-39, we find a profound moment where Jesus asks two of John the Baptist's disciples, "What do you seek?" This question, simple yet deeply probing, invites us to reflect on our spiritual journey and the true desires of our hearts. As we explore this passage, we are reminded of the importance of seeking Jesus not just for what He can do for us but for who He is.

The context of this passage is crucial. Following Jesus' baptism and John the Baptist's declaration of Him as the "Lamb of God," two of John's disciples, Andrew and likely John, the gospel's author, begin to follow Jesus. These men were seekers, not content with their current spiritual state. They had followed the Mosaic law and embraced John's message of repentance, but now they were drawn to something more in Jesus. This new Teacher offered a deeper fulfillment that they were eager to explore, even though much remained unknown.

When Jesus asks, "What do you seek?" He is inviting them to examine their motives and desires. Are they looking for a teacher, a prophet, or something more profound like spiritual fulfillment and truth? This question is just as relevant for us today. We often seek meaning in various places—money, power, or even distractions that temporarily fill the void. Yet, true fulfillment is found in Jesus. As believers, we have encountered Him, but our journey of seeking continues as we grow in our relationship with Him.

Jesus' question also challenges us to reflect on our motives. Are we following Him for superficial reasons or genuinely seeking a deeper relationship? This self-reflection is essential to our spiritual growth. Jesus opens the door for deeper dialogue, inviting us to come and see, to spend time with Him, and to truly understand who He is. Just as the disciples stayed with Jesus and learned from Him, we too are called to remain in His presence and grow in our understanding and love for Him.

So, what do we do with this knowledge? How do we apply it to our everyday lives? Here’s one suggestion.

  1. Self-Reflection: Take time to reflect on your relationship with Christ. Ask yourself:

  • Where am I in my relationship with Christ?

  • Am I seeking Jesus for who He is or for what He can do for me?

  • Is my seeking from a position of pure love, or am I expecting something in return?

  1. In Prayer: Ask two simple yet essential questions:

  • What do I seek today?

  • How can I act on what I seek today?

As followers of Christ, we continually seek to become more like Him. When asking, "What do I seek today?" don't rush. Pause and listen to the Holy Spirit for guidance. In what way can I become more like Christ? Pick one area—that will be plenty for one day. Let's use kindness as an example. Again, in prayer, ask the Holy Spirit, "How can I demonstrate kindness today?" I guarantee you will receive an answer, perhaps more than one, which may be revealed surprisingly. These don't have to be big acts; small, intentional, genuine acts matter. These small gifts are responses to God's love shared with someone else—a kind word, listening to a stranger, smiling, and holding the door for someone.

Finally, I encourage you to be continual seekers. Give thanks for what you've found in your search, but refrain from being content. Instead, look for the potential of the undiscovered. Embrace a mindset of continual growth and discovery in your spiritual journey. May we continually seek to know Jesus more deeply and follow Him with sincere hearts. Remember that our true fulfillment is found in Him, and our journey of pursuing Him is lifelong.

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts open to Your guidance and wisdom. Reflecting on Jesus' question, "What do you seek?" helps us examine our motives and desires. May we seek You with genuine hearts, longing for spiritual fulfillment and truth.

Lord, we ask for Your strength to overcome superficial motives and distractions that lead us away from You. Help us to find our true purpose and fulfillment in Your presence. Guide us to seek more profound relationships and follow Your path with unwavering faith.

We thank You for the example of the disciples who sought Jesus with sincere hearts. May their journey inspire us to seek You continually in all we do. Bless us with the courage to ask ourselves this profound question and to live our lives in pursuit of Your love and grace.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Blessings,

Pastor Tim
