"You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created." Revelation 4:11 NRSV
In the final book of the Bible, we return to the creation at the end of mortal time. We have come full circle from the Garden of Eden in Genesis, back around to the New Earth and the redemption of humankind. All the brokenness caused by the fall has been wiped clean -- a new beginning.
In John's vision, he saw the creatures of heaven praising God," Day and night without ceasing they sing, 'Holy, holy, holy, the Lord God the Almighty, who was and is and is to come. (4:8)'" They are followed by the elders who cast their crowns before God, joining with the refrain that is today's scripture. Without fully understanding the fantastical imagery and meaning of the creatures and elders, we can still appreciate the awesomeness and intensity of their praise.
We do not need to wait until the end of time to praise God for his creation. Indeed, we should give him thanks right now for his creation. If possible, at some point today, step outside your door into God's creation. Close your eyes, and just listen. You may hear the trees' rustling, birds singing, dogs barking, the activity of the streets, or something else. Breathe in the smells around you. Perhaps you smell fresh cut grass, the natural decay of woods or even the neighbors grilling. Open your eyes and look around. You may see open fields, wooded lots, neighbors' homes, and much more. The next time you eat, take the time to savor the taste, texture, and sensation of the food. Whatever you hear, smell, see, taste are all God's marvelous works. Not only does he give us all that is around us, but he sent his Son to atone for our sins and offer us salvation. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, he fills that emptiness in our souls. All these things or by his will. Is there any doubt then that God is worthy of receiving our honor and glory? In return, we should offer our thanks and praise.
God, we give you all the glory and honor and power of which you rightly deserve. Each Day you give us so many gifts we take for granted. Everything we smell, hear, see, taste, and feel are gifts from you. The very freedom we find in Christ, the filling of the Holy Spirit, is all because of your love. Forgive us for the times we take any of these gifts for granted. In the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
Blessings!
